elieve it or not, we haven’t always had fridges!
M e a t and other perishables once had to be kept
in fly-proof enclosures designed to allow a breeze
to pass th rough and keep things cool — the A u ssie meat
safe. In the
1890
s, it was developed into the Coolgardie
Safe, w here w et hessian was added to the sides to cool
item s in the safe. Today, a meat safe m akes a great place
to store bread and veg. H a ve a go at m akin g y o u r o w n
safe — this one has sim ple joints and no tricky joinery.
